Whether your student needs help with homework, projects in English or math, passing a tough test, or getting along with peers, I can help with coaching for academics, social concerns, anxiety and special needs.
Through my own K-12 years, I struggled with self-esteem, depression and worry--and didn't know where to turn. Now as an experienced Seattle school teacher for under-served youth, I provide confidence-building approaches that empower students to overcome fears and stay in their higher minds where learning happens.

Success Coaching
Parents often feel that their student isn't receiving the instruction they need in school. If your student is avoiding homework and complaining about teachers, try a free one-on-one or small group coaching. I'll come to your home, or meet me in my Seattle office to meet your student and enjoy with kid-friendly brain boosters and alternative learning activities.
When your student has a special need, it's natural to worry whether they are getting the services they need. So often our students lose confidence and give up before they start.
I can also advocate for your child at school or IEP meetings. And, I offer specially designed curriculum for success coaching, as well self-calming mindfulness to overcome anxiety and ADHD concerns.

Social Emotional Learning For School and Home
If your student is avoiding teachers' and parents' advice, you're in good company. Kids often shy away from their parents but are more open to other adults in overcoming anxiety and avoidance.
With individualized learning, students can get motivated by identifying their strongest learning style and overcoming inner fears and outer challenges. As a struggling student myself, I used self-calming and positive self-talk to pass challenging teacher tests and gain five highly-qualified certifications in reading, special education, secondary English, Ell and special education.
I can help your student identify and overcome hurdles one step at a time, using social emotional learning tools.

When I’m mad or sad I use rocket breathing and counting my breaths and squeezing my fists. It’s a meditation that takes you into a realm of calmness.

“Andrea helped me by letting me share my ideas about how to approach math and she understood my thought process. Doing breathing and ringing the bells helped calmed my nervousness about math. I learned that If you’re not calm you can’t do math very well.
She helped me gain more confidence by lots of practice, trying different ways and getting the answers right. After 2 years, I now am much better at math and am able to do homework on my own. My mother doesn't need to sit with me and help me all the time.”
Test Anxiety
Research shows that students who practice mindfulness increase attention, focus, and emotional regulation — which in turn allows them to score 10-20 percent higher on tests.
Over my 30 years of teaching, students suffer less anxiety and enjoy higher scores when they learned practice calming strategies in tough standardized tests.
Research shows that practicing breathing a few weeks before the test is most helpful. I guide my students through affirmations and mindfulness that fits their learning style and personality.
High school through college students find they can boost their standardized testing scores 15-20% with calming brain boosters that open to clear thinking. One of my college clients started highly anxious and nauseous during her engineering test and ended up relaxed and passing with flying colors after three sessions.

Special Needs
Most students with special needs carry trauma from falling behind their peers in school, from name-calling, or from noticing how their way of thinking may be different from peers.
Using my skills as a special education teacher, we start with a simple assessment of your student's performance and IEP with the parent and teacher, including optional school observations.
Next, we work together to find new ways to overcome work avoidance, anxiety and academic concerns. Visualization, affirmation and mindful practices increase focus and calm anxiety.

How one boy overcame math phobia:
"My student Nick and his mom struggled with 5th grade math homework. During weekly home visits, we started with bringing our attention to our body and breath while listening to the bells. Next, we practiced three mindful breaths with Space Needle and Seahawks breathing. It might sound simple but it made a big difference to Nick."
How homework became a breeze:
"The next day Nick's mom wrote to me: 'Our math homework session started out poorly, but quickly took a positive turn once we remembered what we had learned how to relate differently to the numbers. It was absolutely wonderful; we quickly got through the homework! Finally, we hugged each other afterward knowing something special had happened. I can't thank you enough."

Transitioning to College
Leaving home for college can come with a new set of anxieties and struggles.
The pressure to perform and the additional academic rigor in higher level classes can be overwhelming to college and graduate students. Through success coaching, students transition to a more confident mindset that includes decreased test anxiety, more efficient time management skills and tips for social connections. |
